Everyone knows the intro to Back that Azz Up. When you hear the violins start, you prepare yourself to follow the directions that the song provides. I got the chance to hear and follow the directions live on June 24 at Juvenile’s sold out show at Jon Batiste’s Jazz Club. He performed his full catalogue of hits, and even promoted his new song with Megan Thee Stallion that is trending all over Tik Tok. But, obviously, the energy in the room changed when he performed his hits Slow Motion and Back that Azz Up. Juvenile was such an exciting performer and truly provided the vibe of the 99 to the 2000s.
This night highlighted the potential that The Bahamas has to continue bringing in world class performers. We always have large concerts, like Janet Jackson or John Legend, but the Jon Batiste Jazz Club offers a different experience. The intimate space provides a way for a closer concert, not one that is made for a megastar, but a niche, carefully curated experience, that those looking for an alternative music venue can enjoy.
The next artist they’re bringing is Musiq Soulchild, another icon, but will appeal to a certain crowd. I’m excited to see the development of alternative music spaces, and the shift in culture that the Jazz Club can present. Jon Batiste’s Jazz Club isn’t just hosting events; it’s driving a welcome shift in the local entertainment culture, proving that intimate musical experiences have a permanent home in The Bahamas.
