What brings all the gyals to the yard? Dis Plantain. And for the sake of not being explicit, I’ll assume Sherwood Rahming is actually talking about the fruit. Released on his project Smood Teengs, “Dis Plantain” is a sonic slice of Bahamian life. The track treats its subject, our caramelized island staple, as a metaphor for the finer, sweeter things in life (raising my eyebrows here), delivered with a laid-back rhythm that makes it impossible not to bob your head.
Once again, the Bahamian storytelling we know and love is on full display. Rahming weaves witty metaphors throughout the track, leaving you to wonder: is he talking about the dining room or the bedroom? It’s exactly the kind of clever wordplay that makes Bahamian music unique, honoring home-grown humor.
Rahming isn’t in it alone, though. He is a pillar of the TOTO Collective, a group of talented young Bahamians actively rewriting the rules of the local music scene. TOTO recently wrapped up a showcase in London, pushing Bahamian talent onto a global stage and proving that our modern sound has absolutely no borders.
The tales of “Dis Plantain” have officially spread worldwide. Even though I think only Bahamians truly understand what Sherwood’s saying, it’s a sound that anyone would enjoy.
