One ting Bahamians love is they belly. And for three days last weekend, the Gladstone Road Farmer’s Market gave everybody exactly what they came for.
Agri Expo 2026 launched under the theme ‘Our Heritage Our Future’, taking over the Farmers Market grounds from April 10 through 12. The people, myself included, came out in numbers; hungry, curious, and ready. The mission: food, drink, and merriment.
The event also brought out some of the country’s most talented artisans, who, in turn, brought the culture to the expo grounds with handcrafted straw works and locally made goods that, quite frankly, could rival anything found in cultural museums and displays from around the world.
For the foodies among us, cooking demonstrations and food samples were a definite treat, but it was the Battle of the Islands chef showdown that drew the crowds. One by one, local chefs put their kitchen skills to the test, incorporating fresh local ingredients to create down-home meals just like grammy used to make.
As the afternoon stretched into evening, the grounds transformed again to accommodate the throngs of people moving away from food demos to string lights and live music performances. If you’ve ever been to a regatta then you know the feeling of being surrounded by a truly Bahamian kinda vibe and this wasn’t much different.
But what made this year’s expo worth more than just a good time was the attention paid to bringing this year’s theme of heritage and future progress to the fore. Now, more than ever, Bahamians are paying closer attention to what goes on their plate. We want fresher produce, cleaner meats, and food that is closer to the source. And every April, this event becomes the most delicious answer to that shift in mindset. We’re talking locally grown produce, organic offerings, free-range meats, fresh herbs, and seedlings you could take straight home and put in the ground. All of it grown right here, by Bahamians, and it’s a reminder that our culture and traditions run deeper than just sun sand and sea. Its also soil, and people, and art and music and community. Ya can’t beat that wit a stick!
April 2027. Mark it now. The seeds have been planted. Literally. Don’t miss it again!
