Hello Wybers, today we take on the subject of pirated media. On April 12th, 2026 a high definition quality finished version of the animated inbetweenquel film was leaked on the internet and at the time of the writing of this article is one of the top 20 reviewed films on the movie review platform Letterboxd. This animated film is a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender and a prequel to Avatar: The Legend of Korra and was not scheduled to be released until October 9th, 2026 on Paramount + to the dismay of fans who were expected a theatrical release since the project was announced back in February of 2021.
The leak of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender which is also known as The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender brings to mind a couple of other high profile leaks of the 2000s from the then 20th Century Fox film studio. On March 31st 2009 a workprint version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine was leaked of the film that had a release date in theaters of May 1st, 2009. The man accused of uploading the unfinished film to the site Megaupload was Gilberto Sanchez, who was sentenced to 1 year in federal prison. On December 20th, 2015 a screener version of The Revenant was leaked of the film that had a release date in theaters of Christmas Day December 25th, 2015. In October of 2016 a former employee of 20th Century Fox was fined $1.12 million for uploading the movie to the internet along with The Peanuts Movie. The suspected 26 year old hacker out of Singapore using the handle ImStillDissin on X formerly Twitter was arrested for leaking the Aang film and if convicted will face a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison and/or pay a fine of $50,000.
The fact that this happened during the week of CinemaCon 2026 when Paramount Skydance was showing their new line-up of films to theater owners across North America, along with select international markets, is not lost on those following the corporate hijinks. Since Paramount Skydance is looking to merge with Warner Bros. there are many conspiracy theories that feel this is a move to make them seem weak in the eyes of shareholders. There are even more conspiracy theorists who feel someone within the company let this happen to prove to the public that this should have been released in theaters instead of streaming and that the buzz around it will encourage Nickelodeon Studios (a subsidiary of Paramount Global formerly Viacom) to give the film a limited theatrical run like what was done for K-Pop Demon Hunters by Netflix due to its popularity. Time will tell what plays out for the film and the corporation, but this has also led to free publicity for the third series in the Avatar franchise tentatively titled Avatar : Seven Havens and, of course, the second season of the live action Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender due to premiere on the streaming service June 25th, 2026.
