Sony dropped a bomb on the gaming industry 2 days ago with their announcement of price increases on ALL their hardware (PS5, Pro & PS Portal). Effective April 2nd, 2026 all PlayStation hardware will receive significant price increases of $100-$150 on retail pricing.
PS5 Digital: From $499.99 to $599.99
PS5 Disk: From $549.99 to $649.99
PS5 Pro: From 749.99 to $899.99
CONCERNS
These significant price increases leave both gamers and developers worried, as global economics and events are already drastically affecting the price of everyday life. This also hits hard for 3rd World Countries like here in The Bahamas, where the majority of Bahamian gamers have to order their consoles online and bring them in via shipping companies; or buy them abroad and pay duty coming home. With the increase in prices plus the tax added on, a lot of Bahamian gamers are questioning if its worth it to spend this amount of money.
THE REASON
Sony states in their blog post that prices are increasing due to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” which we all know with recent events have affected the price of all things world over. Specifically, on the technological side, electronics manufactures are being faced with increases in components such as graphics cards and RAM thanks to our robotic friends known as AI. Large tech companies are trying to expand their AI Data Centers which is causing a ripple affect throughout the tech industry due to a higher demand in components.
Large component shortages have affected-and delayed-the Playstation 6 itself, being rumored to have been pushed back to 2028 or 2029, Valve’s Steam Machine’s roll out AND will most likely affect Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2 Prices to increase sometime in the near future. This is a large plague that has taken the entire gaming and tech industry by storm. Consumers and manufacturers are all taking a massive hit.
We can only hope that some point soon all of this blows over and things can return back to normal. But that is of course plainly hopeful thinking.
