We caught up with Denzel Lightbourne on a quiet afternoon before the studio got loud with everyone else’s schedule. No rehearsed answers, just him leaned back with his hands still faintly stained from whatever piece he had been working on before we walked in. This is the cover star sit down we promised, the one where we set the art questions aside and just let him talk.
Coffee, energy drink, or just vibes. What actually fuels a painting session? And what has to be playing while you create?
“Music, next question.” He laughs, then adds that it is less about a specific song or album and more about a genre. For him that genre is almost always Hip Hop.
What is the most Bahamian thing about you that has nothing to do with art?
“I like to fish, I like to sit by the water and just think.” It is a stillness that seems to follow him even off the water.
What is the last thing that made you laugh way too hard?
“My nephew, he’s such a character.” He does not need to say much more than that.
Are you a night owl or up with the sun when it comes to creating?
“Both of ’em, I could paint all day if you let me.” The work does not really clock out for him.
Is there one color you could never quit?
“My newest favorite color is brown, its just so rich and versatile.” The way he talks about it, it could double as a description of himself.
What is your comfort food after a long day in the studio?
“Seafood for sure.”
What cartoon or movie shaped you more than you would admit?
“Tarzan, it showed me it’s cool to be different.”
If you were not an artist, what would you be doing right now?
“Probably cleaning swimming pools, helping my Dad with his business.” A grounded answer from someone whose work feels anything but ordinary.
What one word would your closest friends use to describe you?
“Creative.” He says it like it was never really a question at all.
By the time we wrap, it is clear the interview never really felt like an interview. It felt like sitting with someone who has nothing to prove, who paints because the music tells him to and lives because the water tells him to slow down. Lightburnz on canvas is one thing. Lightburnz in conversation is something else entirely, and honestly, just as worth paying attention to.
