And when it comes to Iceman, one of Drake’s THREE surprise albums that dropped last night, Bahamians all over the country are listening even more intently. It’s no shocker to us for Drake to mention us, he’s done it on Bahamas Promises, and other subtle nods throughout his discography. But Iceman brings it to another level, even mentioning Sam Bankman’s FTX tussle with Bahamian law enforcement. There are a few different lines where he mentions us, like “Now the Penthouse in Bahamas next to Jordan like I’m Lebanese” on Make Them Pay. Lines like this have set Twitter timelines on fire, with discussion about how Drake’s mentioning Albany, or hinting at being at SLS.
The narrative of the discourse is that all this talk about The Bahamas will wake up Nassau’s nightlife, or maybe finally dethrone Turks & Caicos as the apple of Drake’s eye. It’s not every day you hear the 6God rapping about Junkanoo or even the cover art being a hand sign known locally as a political party’s signal. With the timing of the album drop and the timing of the political changing of the guard in the country, either Drake’s really tapped in or it’s a crazy coincidence. At a moment when our country is balancing local pride and potential global attention, Drake mentioning The Bahamas as a status symbol lands differently. One thing’s for certain, The Bahamas is on the forefront of Drake’s mind, and much like the rest of the country, I’m hoping to run into him walking around the Baha Mar Casino.
