If you’re anything like me, you’ve been patiently awaiting a release from Steve Lacy since the Grammy award winning “Gemini Rights” in 2022. Gemini Rights included songs we know and love, like Bad Habit and its infectious chorus ” I wish I knew you wanted me”, or Mercury’s bossa nova remix. On June 5, in true Gemini fashion, Steve released ” The Feeling”, the single for his upcoming album “Oh Yeah”, coming out on July 17. The song’s sound is classic Steve, one that was attempted to be replicated by other indie R&B artists like Malcolm Todd, but he didn’t quite hit the mark. The Feeling talks about the uncertainty of not being able to be with the person that you want. It all feels like a dream, but it leaves you questioning one thing: Am I your baby? When your heart is on your sleeve, does it matter? Deciding to just be friends with that person out of fear, or unrequited love, doesn’t that make the whole situation sadder? We all know the feeling of not knowing where you stand with someone. We scroll Instagram, wait endlessly for the story posts, praying for a like. But these sweet nothings don’t do anything for the anxiety but further it. This track questions are we together? Do I mean anything? While balancing the fact that it may be best that we aren’t together, and we’re better off friends. The song is sonically set to a whimsical bass heavy sound that only Steve can execute. I patiently await Oh Yeah’s release on July 17, with my tissues in hand, but for now, I’ll keep asking: “Am I your baby?”
