The Rise of Goombay House

You may remember Sherwood Rahming from a few articles back. Well, he’s back again, with a new project that is truly bringing Bahamian music to a different height: Goombay House. Sherwood has been hosting the Listen Close series for a while now, where he will have local djs and performers create an atmosphere that brings an alternative vibe to the Nassau nightlife scene. The most recent Listen Close was held at Hillside House and featured the first public listening of “Goombay House” What happens when you put The Bahamas National Youth Choir’s smash hit “Celebrate” to the track of a house beat? A combination of Calvin Harris- esque backtracks to a Baha Men song, is something I’ve never heard.

In Sherwood’s own words, Goombay House is “another iteration in the Bahamian music expression that can live closer to the modern sounds of global dance music.” He’s already used “Coming Home” in one of his mixes as well. And while I was devastated that I wasn’t able to attend the last Listen Close as a huge house music and Bahamian music fan, I am excited that the next Dazed will feature another premiere of the genre. If you aren’t familiar with Dazed, it’s one of Nassau’s hottest day parties, another attempt to give people an experience that drifts from the mainstream. While I vowed not to go back to Dazed because I felt that they weren’t providing what was advertised, the inclusion of Goombay House seems like a step in the right direction. I’m excited to head to Carnivale this weekend to hear and see the amalgamation of the Bahamian alternative. If you don’t already, check out Sherwood @sherwood.rahming on Instagram, I’m sure it’ll lead you to all his other platforms too.
