What would you want playing behind you when you enter a room?
Are there lyrics?
Is it a simple melody?
If there are lyrics, what are they about?
Sadness & melancholy, perseverance & love?
Or is your theme song just a chance to symbolize a beginning?
A euphonious chance for introduction?
For this introduction, and this introduction only, Jaz, Wybe’s new associate music writer, is claiming Igor’s Theme by Tyler, The Creator as her theme song.
Just like everyone else, theme songs change based on the situation.
This time, she’s chosen a song with few words, as her hope is that over time, the words that are written, on the pages you read, will be able to tell the story of these songs.
If you aren’t familiar with Igor’s Theme, much like the song name suggests, it is the first song on Tyler, The Creator’s Grammy award winning album, IGOR. A perfect entrance to the album, showing the rollercoaster of sound and lyricism that the listener is bound to experience while listening to IGOR. The song starts with synths that force you to listen more intently, and some of the most prominent lyrics are “got my eyes open”, strategically placed towards the end of the track, priming you for what’s next. Album openers are often played once on the initial listen and then forgotten about. Which is a tragedy, because they’re doing the hardest job, setting the tone for a whole body of work.
When choosing a theme song, what are the most important aspects? For Jaz, It’s always been about the beat. Something that moves things along. Igor’s Theme does that. Jaz needs something that feels almost ominous, a sound that you can try to anticipate, but there’s no point when you are absolutely sure what will happen next. A warning and a welcome at the same time.
The album opener pulls you in and sets the tone for what’s coming.
Because at the end of the day, what we come in with is what sticks.
I hope I’ve made a good impression.
